Laura House at the Foundling MuseumSuperheroes, Orphans &amp; Origins, 2022

	The Artisa
Foundation is delighted to announce the opening of a new exhibition Superheroes,
Orphans &amp; Origins: 125 years in Comics at the Foundling Museum.

This has been
curated by Laura House, our
first Arisa Fellow at the Museum.
&nbsp;

Laura
completed her 9-month fellowship over intense periods of lockdown. The
opening of this exhibition, especially in such a difficult context, is a testament
to her hard work, agile creative practice, and superb support from Museum staff.

“The Fellowship post
focused on the research and development of an exhibition exploring the
representation of orphans, foundlings, adoptees and foster children in comics
and graphic novels. My involvement in the development and production of this
exhibition project provided many opportunities for professional development,
skills acquisition and networking both within the Foundling Museum and across
the cultural sector more broadly.”-Laura House, Artisa Fellow, The Foundling MuseumThe exhibition has its
origins in a site-specific work created for the museum in 2014 by poet, Lemn
Sissay – Superman was a Foundling is a poem printed on the
walls of the museum’s Study Studio.

It is the first
exhibition of its kind to explore the representation of foundlings, orphans,
adoptees and foster children in comics, graphic novels and related art around
the world, fittingly hosted in the former Foundling Hospital, London’s historic
children’s home.

Also on display are
three brand-new commissions by comic artists Asia Alfasi, Bex Glendining and
Woodrow Phoenix, all examining care identity and experience.

The exhibition runs for five months from 1st April
to 28th August 2022. Please click here to book.

Loco Glass with Artisa Founder Ricard Paice at Rodmarten Manor.

Artisa are delighted to announce that Loco Glass have been awarded with this year’s Gloucestershire Guild of Craftsmen Award.

In previous years the award has provided funding and mentoring to a young craftsperson who is a new member of the Guild, with the award being presented at their celebrated Summer Show. From 2021 onwards, the award will now be for an existing member who’s work best responds to the context of their annual show at Rodmarten Manor in the Cotswolds.Loco Glass were selected not only because their work reflects the Arts and Crafts heritage of the house, including its award winning garden, but also because they have really challenged their practice technically and devised a completely new approach to their work.

Artisa's latest Curatorial Fellow, Laura House, began her fellowship as we entered lockdown in March 2020. Together, with the Foundling Museum, we decided to move ahead with the planned recuritment. Since then, Laura House has developed an exciting&nbsp;exhibition exploring the representation of orphans, foundlings, adoptees and foster children in comics and graphic novels. Her project is to be shown at the Foundling Museum in 2022 and was inspired by Lemn Sissay’s Foundling Fellowship piece, the graphic installation, Superman was a Foundling.

The Fellowship has enabled the Museum to unlock the full potential of this idea, develop it for tour (perhaps even internationally) and provide organisational learning and valuable partnerships to establish a future touring programme. It aimed to provide an opportunity for an experienced curator to develop their practice, through creating a touring exhibition on an engaging and important subject, working two days per week over 9 months.

Lockdown caused substantial difficulties for some areas of Laura’s work, such as arranging museum store visits during the intense lockdown of early 2020, to view collections where extensive catalogue records or images were not available. However, potential lending institutions were as helpful as they could possibly be, accepting broad loan requests with the aim of refining them at a later date. Identifying and contacting living artists proved somewhat more straightforward. Laura completed her fellowship with confirmed, agreed loans in place from a range of international, national and individual lenders. The resulting cast of characters is international and excitingly rich in its diversity of characters, authors, life experiences, forms and time periods.

“When I started this Fellowship, I was motivated to acquire a working knowledge of specific exhibitions practices (e.g. touring development and protocol), a new subject (comics), and the organisational structure of the Foundling Museum. I have been able to achieve success in these three areas (and beyond) thanks to the Fellowship framework and the generosity of the Foundling Museum staff." &nbsp;
— Laura House&nbsp;

Although Laura has meticulously documented her work, to prepare for handover, we have managed to find the resource to secure her as a freelance curator, so that she can bring the exhibition to fruition, contribute an essay to the catalogue and participate in exhibition programming.

It has been encouraging for the Museum to have such a strong future project in development, while other projects nearer at hand have had to be significantly reshaped due to Covid. The Museum is delighted with all that Laura has been able to achieve, especially in such a difficult context, and very pleased the decision was made to press ahead with the Fellowship.

Artisa's latest Curatorial Fellow, Jill Sutherland, presents an exciting redisplay following her work with the Holburne Museum. During her post, she concentrated on two objectives: to review the interpretation methods at the museum and to implement a physical change in one of the displays. The Plantation Day Book, a little-known ledger in the collection, became the focus of her work. Ledgers like this were used in British colonies to document imports and exports for accounting purposes. This included enslaved people who were born in their possession, bought and sold, and who died on the plantation. The Plantation Day Book is missing the majority of its pages - only one page with legible content remains, itemising a delivery of candles, beef and cocoa.

<img width="1460" height="1182" width_o="1460" height_o="1182" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/099f11cbafcd9a1717253bd11c5e3da70e60858e16ad93c74251ca63b0c043aa/Screenshot-2021-05-11-at-19.21.47.png" data-mid="108125772" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/099f11cbafcd9a1717253bd11c5e3da70e60858e16ad93c74251ca63b0c043aa/Screenshot-2021-05-11-at-19.21.47.png" />

At present, the book is on display in a drawer in the Museum's Fletcher Gallery. This section of the Museum is dedicated to taste and elegance in Georgian Bath and is of stark contrast to the transactional treatment of people of colour during this period. Labelled 'Sugar and Slavery', the drawer contains only a brief summary of the production of sugar by enslaved Africans for European consumption. It is currently displayed with minimal significance to the overall narrative of the gallery, and shown less care and attention than its neighbouring objects.&nbsp;

<img width="2450" height="1276" width_o="2450" height_o="1276" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/790458de70b591f82e8bf9e5844c4bb8d1e4d012128b18510e05a53442ffc5c7/Screenshot-2021-05-11-at-18.21.14.png" data-mid="108119959" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/790458de70b591f82e8bf9e5844c4bb8d1e4d012128b18510e05a53442ffc5c7/Screenshot-2021-05-11-at-18.21.14.png" />

Jill's research reviews what kind of stories, histories and representations we present in our museums in Britain and in the Holburne. Her process was heavily collaborative, working alongside The Barbados Museum, Barbadian-Glaswegian artist, Alberta Whittle, and students of colour - transforming it into a display that will be conducive of dialogue between people.

"Connections were made and collaboration became a driving force behind the display. I have been waiting to land that curator role in the context of connection and after this, I feel I now am that curator."

The new display has three main themes: Remembrance, rehousing the Plantation Day Book in its own case alongside a poetic epitaph by Alberta Whittle with contributions from Barbados Museum; Acceptance, presenting research that shows that the Holburne family was connected to the slave trade; and Resistance, displaying examples of black and white individuals with links to Bath and Somerset who were activists or demonstrated black agency in the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries.

In the development of its Curatorial Fellowship Programme, Artisa is delighted to announce it has partnered with the Crafts Council to offer an opportunity, for a mid-career curator, to explore the Craft Council Collection from a new perspective; for a provocateur to shift the existing discussion of craft, collections, and curatorial norms.At the end of 2019, Shai Akram received the inaugural Crafts Council Curatorial Fellowship, and she has been developing her project in the confines of this pandemic. Her work brings a new language to the categorisation, documentation and understanding of craft through the collection. With her practice as a designer (Studio Alt Shift), Shai has drawn on a different set of criteria and canon of understanding to curating the collection. Her agile approach and creative thinking have been critical when faced with the global spread of Covid-19 and the ensuing lockdown, demanding the project to extend in time, and shift from a gallery exhibition to a purely digital output.

<img width="1024" height="768" width_o="1024" height_o="768" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/a119df9febcd38175c7b653aab7a236d3db7aed03001c90cfd7d3a2f5200485a/Crafts-Council--Artisa-Fellowship-thematic-overview.003.jpeg" data-mid="106729457" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/a119df9febcd38175c7b653aab7a236d3db7aed03001c90cfd7d3a2f5200485a/Crafts-Council--Artisa-Fellowship-thematic-overview.003.jpeg" />

By deconstructing the process by which objects were made, and the systems of museum documentation, Shai is able to bring a new voice and new perspective to the structure and categorisation of the collection. She has created three alternative categories by which works across materials and disciplines could be categorised, based on core production values.

<img width="1024" height="768" width_o="1024" height_o="768" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/b61aa3eb41657d88ef4d5319afab0e519b03e63c23ef702120e45e9055b49a9a/Crafts-Council--Artisa-Fellowship-thematic-overview.028.jpeg" data-mid="106729458" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/b61aa3eb41657d88ef4d5319afab0e519b03e63c23ef702120e45e9055b49a9a/Crafts-Council--Artisa-Fellowship-thematic-overview.028.jpeg" />

The Crafts Council Collection spans 50 years of making in the UK, providing a snapshot of innovation within contemporary craft from the 1970s to now. The new digital framing of Shai’s project, due to the pandemic, has resulted in a challenging of systems, understanding and reading of collection objects. The project and its research has reinvigorated the Crafts Council team and the frameworks for documentation, narrative and understanding of craft.

The final digital provocations, designed by Shai to interrogate our understanding of how craft is categorised, will be live on the Crafts Council website shortly.Images by Studio Alt Shift www.studioaltshift.com

‘Come and explore the many stories from the Petrie Museum’s collection with artist Laura Durward. Together we can sculpt the past, as we unlearn the museum’s existing narratives.Participants will be led through a series of writing and making exercises where they will unpack this incredible collection all the while questioning the agency of museums and the bodies that occupy them.’Laura Durward (Professional Development Award, Goldsmiths University’s Design Department) employs layered storytelling, wordplay and montage to explore the complicated and often flawed dance between our imagination and reality. Bodies of Knowledge (supported by Artisa) follows on from Laura Durward’s Ba Design project Function Unknown which was installed as a museum handling collection at The Old Truman Brewery last year.
