In year Emma Leslie and Rhiannon Wilkey (Studio LW) completed the Crafts Council’s Hothouse Programme. Their business first started in a workshop at Sugarhouse Studios in Stratford with other ex-graduates of the Building Crafts College.

“Delighted as we were to have been selected, we didn’t entirely appreciate how invaluable it would be as the year progressed and the demands of operating as a small business became evident.”

The programme provided a stimulating and supportive environment where Studio LW could focus and develop their practice. They widened their creative contacts, forged a network of other makers and gained access to a range of expert advice through workshops and mentorship support.

“It’s even encouraged us to look at how we function as a partnership, and alerted us to pitfalls that would undoubtedly have tripped us up at some point along the way. We have a much better understanding of where to place and how to cost our work, and how to make our practice more creatively and economically sustainable.”
