Cockpit Arts Performance in Craft Award
2016
The award was created to capture the dynamic approach to craft that some of the artist/makers within the Cockpit Arts community of studios employ. It complimented the Artist in Residency initiative that Cockpit Arts has just created, with funding from the Arts Council. The award provided the opportunity for one of their members to create a work – be it a physical object and event or a film – that reflected their performative approach to making. A number of members applied for the award and a shortlist of 5 were selected for interview. Sarah was then awarded the prize, which provided funding as well as mentoring. Here’s Cockpit’s overview of the award:
The ‘Performance of Craft Award’ follows the launch of Cockpit’s first Artist-Maker Residency in 2016, sending a strong signal that Cockpit Arts is not only concerned with product and ‘commercial’ business development, but also with creativity and concepts as a means of developing artistically and within a sustainable business model. The Award comprised a cash sum to realise her proposed performance piece as well as in-house coaching tailored to support Sarah to develop a sustainable practice. She also received specialist mentoring from Adriana Paice and Julia Lancaster of ACME Studios.
