Nic Osbourne

Curatorial Fellowship
Kettle’s Yard

2017

In 2017, Nicholas Osborne was awarded the fellowship at Kettle’s Yard. The Curatorial Fellowship was Nicholas’ first opportunity to work within a public arts institution.

By way of welcoming the North Cambridge community to the newly refurbished Kettle’s Yard, Nicholas combined Tate Exchange and the community into a single project based on North Cambridge’s annual Arbury Carnival. Nicholas invited the carnival committee members to Tate Exchange as a celebration of community creativity. This was partnered with textile workshops to build a patchwork representing the community from the event. Nicholas connected the Tate Exchange back to Cambridge by working with North Cambridge Academy students to recycle puppets and combine with the Tate Exchange fabric for the 2018 Arbury Carnival parade.

Tate Exchange enabled Nicholas to proactively test his curatorial knowledge and witness the outcome of these decisions. A process of research and reflection challenged Nicholas to critically consider how North Cambridge community, Tate and Kettle’s Yard goals would be achieved. Additionally, Nicholas awareness of community engagement supported Arbury carnival committee members’ engagement and enabled the community to have a greater agency over the project.
