The Girl Who Ate All Her Hair

Cynthia Cruz

30 October to 22 November 2015 1pm to 6pm Thursday to Sunday Private View: Thursday 29 October, 6pm to 8pm

Cynthia Cruz, recipient of the 2014/2015 Goldsmiths Studio Award, presents her first solo show at the Acme Project Space. The exhibition is a collection of Cynthia’s recent works across painting, sculpture, digital printing and video.

Cynthia’s practice seeks to construct a world built upon imagery that represents bits and pieces of personal and universal tragedies, the darkest moments in her own and other people’s lives.

These fantastical worlds are constructed through play. ‘Grown up toys’ such as computers, iPhone apps, acrylic and enamel paint, special effects make-up and junk found in the studio, are applied alongside found imagery from the internet; specifically the sorts of images that are passed around on social media that draw on themes of tragedy, horror and the absurd.

Through a process of collaging and layering using these ‘toys,’ Cynthia transforms the graphic source material into vivid other-worldly imagery across painting, sculpture and video.  Similar to the mysterious fictional contracts of childhood fantasies, the works are unguarded and unapologetic in the line they tread between humour and bad taste, playfulness and menace.
