Alison Ballance

ACME Studio Award
Goldsmiths University
Master of Fine Art
2016

Alison Balance’s practice employs a deft organisation of hand-woven textiles, print works, watercolour drawings and texts, as a means to explore a restrained yet emphatic way of talking about doubt. During her time as an ACME studio resident, 2016-2017, she focused on the act of becoming. Her works are produced through quickly made drawings of half-remembered dreams, imagery from leftover video stills and written notes.

Receiving the ACME studio award gave Alison Ballance access to a creative network, studio space and to Peer Gallery, and included curatorial support for a show at the gallery. Included in this new network, was a team of fellow award recipients in which they were able to meet regularly to share critical feedback and ideas and to create a friendly, supportive and lively atmosphere in which they could work in.

“All the meetings and discussions we’ve had has invigorated me and it has made a huge impact on my practice in the amount of work I have been able to make.”

Alongside her participation in the show Wherewithal at Peer Gallery, her year with ACME also saw her selected for Open Film 2016 (with Abigail Smith), by Ed Atkins Outpost Norwich; PiD 1, Feminist Practice in Dialogue, ICA London, 2015 (cur. Catherine Long, Rose Gibbs); as well as collaborating on a range of publications and posters for Glasgow International 2016, DIY Space in London and PiD.
